Sleeping Beauties (2014)
Spinning and throwing their passengers around, fun rides are the main attraction for the thrill seekers at every fairground. Equipped with powerful sound systems and covered with countless light bulbs their noise and illumination draw the attention of every passerby. However, there is another side to these loud and blazing machines. Because when the fairground visitors left, the fun rides fall asleep: music and lights are shut down, moving parts are put into a “parking position”, cars and seats are covered. Like alien creatures waiting for the next day to come the sleeping rides reveal a strange beauty that is hardly visible during operation time.
I shot Sleeping Beauties at the Munich Oktoberfest during the early morning hours when the fun rides were prepared for the day.
